Final stretch

Robert Morris split their weekend matchups, losing the first game to Mount St. Mary’s before pulling out a very good win over Wagner at the Sewell Center. This moved the Colonials to 6-8 in NEC play, only good for 8th place (tied with Bryant), but RMU is just two games out of 4th (and at least one home game in the NEC tournament).

Here’s what we know. RMU has a very easy schedule left. They will play road games at Bryant and CCSU this weekend. They beat the Blue Devils earlier this season and flat out blew a game to the Bulldogs. Then they have home games against Sacred Heart and FDU to close out the regular season. Should RMU not get a home game in Moon Twp for the NEC tournament, the 2/25 matchup vs SHU will be the last game ever at the Sewall Center.

The two biggest games have to be Bryant and SHU. RMU is tied with Bryant with a loss head-to-head, and trails SHU by one game but already beat them once. Should RMU win those two games and take care of cellar dweller CCSU, Robert Morris would at least finish 6th in the final standings.

If RMU wants to get up to fourth, they have their work cut out for them. They would likely need to win out, getting to 10-8 and get a little bit of help. St. Francis PA is currently tied for the 4th spot, and they already have both head to head wins. RMU would likely have to at least tie FDU or LIU, who both already sit on nine wins and jump Wagner in the process.

Here’s the wild thing. Maybe RMU should hope to avoid a home game? I mean I’m sorta kidding, but it seems like this young team is much more focused and locked in on the road. RMU is currently both 3-4 at home and on the road, but the “easiest” road trip of the season remains.

Regardless, as we’ve seen over the years, getting hot at the end of February means more than anything else. With the win over Wagner, and three VERY winnable games left as well as a clash with the defending champ, RMU can grab some big time momentum heading in NEC tournament play.

I think the biggest key, avoid the eight seed. Mount St. Mary’s looks like the best team in the conference. The Mount has a three game lead in the standings with four to go. With hat said they’ve had their share of hiccups (they’ve lost to Bryant and CCSU of all teams!), and I absolutely think Robert Morris could beat them (they were a dumb technical from about doing so this past weekend), but history says it won’t happen in the One vs Eight matchup. No eight seed has ever beaten a one seed in the NEC tournament. The best bet is getting up to six, and getting a matchup vs say, FDU or LIU.
